AVATAR (by Alex)

(in progress...)

It's been a while since I last posted, I apologize profusely. I had been trying to cope with my weekly schedule, which turns out to be non-routine, so it was hard to be to get myself to sit and draw around the same time everyday like I usually do. There's just so much going on with my new life right now that's why.
Now that I've realized I don't have a routine anymore, I figured that I'd just sketch and draw whenever I am able to no matter where I am. I drew this one today, 2 hours in the library, and another on the couch in my wife's apartment on campus lounging around with her and her housemates. Definitely feels like drawing in public too, and I am slowly getting used to the idea.
I am sorry I hadn't been able to visit all your sites looking at your drawings, I'll catch up I promise.
Thank you all again for dropping by and leaving comments. I really appreciate it a lot, and I'll try to draw more too. ^^

  1. Nicely done but honestly, I'm not sure you can copyright work based on someone else's creation -- unless of course you've contacted them and received permission.

  2. Hey Alex, this is a terrific drawing! Faces at an angle are so difficult and your proportions are just perfect.
I hope your new life brings you all sorts of happiness :)

  3. You did an amazing job with this, Alex. Besides the terrific job with the faces (as Louise said, you picked a difficult pose to draw), I really like what you did with the background! nancy

  5. Beautiful drawing Alex! I'm so glad you shared your progress too. You captured the faces so well and your shading is excellent. It is so hard to function in the absence of a routine- however, it looks as though you are figuring it out. Keep up the good work!

  6. Nice to see you posting again. Very good portrait as always,
having time and good weather I suppose, why not trying urban sketches? Would be fun to see your new city.

  7. Great to see you posting again, Alex! We've missed you! This is fabulous! I haven't seen the movie yet, but it looks interesting. I agree with bendelachanal. You live in a fabulous city for urban sketches now!

  9. Hi Alex! Great drawing! I love the way you render the human eyes and the shadow/light contrast is really good. Take some time to discover your new city one drawing at a time.

  13. Thank you so much everyone for your comments, and for having me not far from your minds :)
I'll try to work on colors a bit more from now onwards, and I'll try to "feel" the city so that I could sketch things I see and like.
Another thing is that, if you haven't watched the movie just yet, please do so... the story is great, and the graphics is phenomenal. :)
If FOX comes knocking on my door tomorrow morning asking me to shut down the post because of Copyright issues, I'd take it as a compliment. ;)

  14. Very well done--excellent faces and the background is my favorite part--whispy and dream-like which fits the movie well.

  15. Hi Alex!
I understand perfectly well what you're going through :) And it will get even more 'interesting' the day you have kids :)
I guess the painting in public thing is a must, you'll feel more comfortable with time.
And, about the sketch, I love it, I loved the movie, and I think you got a very good resemblance on both characters, great job!
    Best regards,
    Carolina

  18. Welcome to my life.

Great job with the drawing - I think you spent less time on this one than you usually do, right? Yet it remains masterful!

And I've figured you out - disappear for months at a time, so every post we can say we miss you! Well, okay, we did miss you. But that's beside the point! ;)

  19. Aww bugger! You sure figured it out Dan... hmmmm, I guess I just have to disappear for years at a time now to be a little more convincing =p

Yeah you're right, I did take less time(about 25%-30%) doing this, perhaps it's because I was sketching in public and I got nervous a lot of time. I'm going to do something else in my next piece.
