Mandy Lane (by Alex)

I am not sure if any of you have watched the movie, but I personally think that the movie is well directed. So it's just a quick sketch(took me 2 hours still) on my Moleskine of how I feel about the movie. Mandy Lane's character played by Amber Heard is both dark and innocent at the same time, and yet could have so much influence in people around her. So I am trying to experiment that with colors, I hope it works.
Thank you all for your birthday wishes, and I am so glad you liked the cake I drew ^^ Perhaps one day I'll learn to bake it myself.

  1. OO I think, with your choice of colors, that you really pulled off what you were intending. The high contrast of color and shadow in the "dark" one really gives you a sense of her evil side whereas the face with warmer colors makes her look more innocent and less scary.

    Great Job!!

  2. Love the way you used and yet limited your color to twoyou can do a portrait as well in color as I've seen you do many times in black and white. Great figure! Great portrait! This is some Moleskine page!

  3. You should learn how to bake your favorite cake. Then you don't ever have to depend on someone to be with you to have it.

Very nice picture. You did a great job of getting across the light and dark side feeling.

  4. Maybe I'm partial to dark drawings and themes anyway, but I think the dark figure in your drawing was executed very well. Her hair, her expression, the lighting - she's very mysterious (if not a bit scary - but in a good way)! You definitely got the good/bad girl theme going very well! -Trish

  5. First...I can not believe I missed your birthday - happy belated! Re this page shows all the work you've done in graphite, shadowing, contouring, etc has really benefitted your work. Terrific job here.

  6. Awesome! great composition, colors, and everything! Love the style of the upper drawing, (comics style? very good, anyway!) I missed a lot, recently... So I wish you a very happy belated birthday! Wanted to say how beautiful is your fiancée (and your drawings of her), and very cool lady too! And your little niece is just too cute : ).
I've noticed that the people who draw the best (like you or Andrea Joseph, and a few others) are also the ones who are the most unsatisfied and unsure with their own work - must be why you're so good, actually ; ) ! Always reaching for the better!

  8. Wow! The detail is terrific and the shading on the top lady is wonderful! I'm a sucker for drama in a drawing. This is great! You've done it again Alex!!!

  10. Thanks Tanna, Dan, Freebird, Trish, Phylis, Kazumi, Owl, Ellen, and Benedicte!
:) Phylis is right about the transition of things learned from graphite sketching to ink, and it certainly has a lot more punch using ink to create contrasts rather than a 6B pencil. I tried checking Bluebery-lesite.com but I don't know any French >.< I could see why Benedicte thought I've seen the comics, the colors and style are very similar :)
And yes, I'd love to learn to bake someday. So someone get the fire extinguisher ready!

  12. The last of my company left yesterday so I should be back up and running on a regular schedule soon.

The details on the dress are amazing, where the dress just catches some light as it turns away from the source...huge thumbs up! All very well done...dramatic lighting, color...everything!

  13. Great composition, Alex! What I especially love is the intense look on her face on the bottom image, and her pose on the upper image.

  14. I agree that your use of color and contrast is fantastic with this. I especially like the variety of color in the dark hair of the bottom image. Doesn't look like you have any trouble at all with markers on your moleskine paper to me :-)

  15. Happy Birthday! I had never heard of blueberry layered cake but what a great memory. I sometimes eat baloney and vinegar. It was something my grandma had always given us when we were little. But nobody I meet has ever heard of it. All I have to do is see baloney and it reminds me of those times. Very nice colors, layering is fantastic.
