Plum Flower (by Alex)

(click to zoom)

I wanted to do this in color initially, but I was afraid that I'd mess it up real bad so I thought I'd play it safe. In the end, it looks kind of messed up anyway -___- So maybe I'll try it again with colors some other time. I also notice that I am getting tired relatively easy these days, that's why I haven't been able to draw more than I used to. I am going to say it's due to weather change, and it is getting a lot colder these days.
The picture was taken by a good friend of mine Douglas, who is an awesome professional photographer. You could find a lot of great subjects for sketching and drawing here. Unfortunately his blog is in Chinese. But we all know that picture says a thousand words right? ;)
Thank you from the bottom of my heart everyone for your comments and your warm wishes in my previous post. I really appreciate them all ^^

  2. Alex, this is beautifully done! I love the light and shadow on the flower and that little bit of light along the twig. This is lovely!

  4. I like the out of focus background! That twig looks so natural too...so many can be stiff and awkward looking. The blossom is very pretty.

  5. Alex;
    This is an amazing drawing. I was thinking... I know in photographs that they can take a black and white and add just a hint of color to the main subject... if you still wanted to add a little color... maybe you could do it like this. However, in saying this, I think the drawing is simply amazing as it is too and I would be more than satisfied if I could achieve the results that you did with this drawing!
    Very well done.

  6. I think that you did a great job with this drawing Alex. I got caught up in the detail that Ann pointed out then saw the shadow of the twig on the back of the petals - for me this is what your drawing is about - light. Well done.

  8. Well done Alex! I think you've conveyed the blurriness of the background while doing a marvelous job on the twig and flower!

    You drawings are awesome, each one is a "finished" drawing in itself. But, I do think it is good to get out of our comfort zone once in a while. (listen to me! Mrs. Comfort Zone herself..LOL)

  9. You do very very beautiful pencil work Alex.. Love everything in it..I would have never tried doing it - too many grays; I am always scared when there are too many shades of grays!

  12. Well with the intro you gave I thought - ok, he's out of his element doing a flower instead of a person or animal - but when I looked at it - it's absolutely beautiful Can't understand what you're complaining about! Just excellent. I should have known better.

  14. Thank you Tammy, Ann & Gary, Ellen, Spinneretta, Kelly, Krista, Raena, Linisha, Nancy, Ramona, Dan, and Marancat :) All your words are kind and encouraging. I appreciate them a lot!

    I do think that I messed it up because the background is a little too geometrical than it should be, and it's a little rough(I know because I rushed it). Definitely something to fix there! I'll do another take with colors next time. ^^

  16. I didn't see your email address anywhere, so I'll just post this here and you can delete it if you want! You said you had hit a slump, not knowing what to sketch. Well, while watching those movies, just hit pause occasionally and do quick sketches of the scene, then push play again. Your sketches are wonderful and finished, like I've said before, but I think sometimes a quick sketch is more relaxing. They help you get through the tough times, in my opinion. Then, when you see something wonderful to sketch, you won't be too tired to do it! Hoping to see more from you soon!

  17. Beautiful and inspiring. Nice shading too. Don't be so hard on yourself! And as you may have noticed, I haven't posted much either lately. I think Raena is quite right; try a few quick sketches on the spot, for the fun of it !
    Cheers!
